Source ‘ scenes ’ and source ‘ domains ’ : insights from a corpus - based study of metaphors for communication

چکیده
1. Aims of paper The general aim of this paper is to present the implications of a corpus-based study of metaphors for communication in British English for the extrapolation of metaphorical ‘source’ domains from linguistic data. Our specific aims are: 1) to provide more evidence for the relevance and centrality of the notion of ‘scene’ (or ‘scenario’) in the analysis of metaphorical patterns, as has been suggested by Grady (1997a) and Musolff (2004); 2) to propose a distinction between different types of ‘scenes’, which would go some way towards explaining the relationship between Grady’s primary ‘scenes’ and Musolff’s more elaborate ‘scenarios’; 4) to show how ‘scenes’ may stand in a variety of relationship to larger ‘domains’, and to reflect on the appropriateness of generalisations at different levels of conceptual abstraction in metaphor analysis.

Conceptual Metaphoric Language Use in Structuring Political Discourse in Iran-West Relations: A CDA Perspective
The present study was carried out with the purpose of examining the role of metaphorical language in the critical discourse analysis (CDA) of political texts based on a modern framework postulated by Kövecses (2015). The corpus of the study consisted of thirty-thousand words chosen as a textual sample to see which source conceptual domains are used and what generic/discursive attributes emerge ...
متن کاملA Cognitive Study of Conceptual Metaphors in English and Persian: Universal or Culture-Specific?
In the last 2 decades, studies on conceptual metaphors have profoundly increased. The development in this field was followed by Lakoff and Johnson's (1980b) work on describing the conceptual role played by metaphors and their correspondence with language and thought. This study aimed to compare conceptual metaphors in Persian and English through a corpus-based approach as well as examining both...
متن کاملTHE EFFECT OF COGNITIVE FUNCTION OF METAPHORS ON TEACHING ECONOMIC TERMS TO IRANIAN ECONOMIC MAJORS IN ESP COURSES
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of two strategies of explicit teaching of economic terms on learners' vocabulary learning and retention. In the first explicit strategy, known as 'etymological elaboration', the focus was on presenting conceptual metaphors through 'identify-the-source' tasks, that is, providing the learners with the source domains underlying the metaphors,...
متن کاملChinese Sketch Engine and Mapping Principles: A Corpus-Based Study of Conceptual Metaphors Using the BUILDING Source Domain
The goal of this paper is to use a largescale corpus, i.e. the Gigaword Corpus via the interface of Chinese Sketch Engine, to determine underlying reasons between source and target domain pairings for conceptual metaphors, called Mapping Principles. In particular, we will employ a frequency-based collocational approach to examine metaphors that use the source domain of BUILDING in Mandarin Chin...
متن کاملThe metaphorical construction of complex domains: the case of speech activity in English
In this paper I provide an account of the way in which the domain of spoken communication is metaphorically constructed in English, on the basis of the analysis of over 450 metaphorical references to speech activity in a corpus of contemporary written British English. I show how spoken communication is mainly structured via a set of source domains that conventionally apply to a wide variety of ...
